What more could one ask for – a beautiful summer-like afternoon in May, a classic New England church setting, fantastic music, inspiring life stories, a cupcake fest, and raising a great deal of money for Haiti!
The inaugral Spirit of Hope Concert featured Soprano Rochelle Bard, Baritone Kenneth Mattice and pianist Michael Strauss who presented a heart-warming and uplifting concert of songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter and Gershwin, and excerpts from The Merry Widow and Carmen. Special appearances were made by the Grace Christian Centre Gospel Choir and a chorus of local singers.
Deacon Peter and Linda Faford received the first Spirit of Hope Award for service to Haiti. Board member Jess Conzo presented $6,000. to Linda Faford who traveled home from Haiti to receive the award. Linda and Peter, parishioners of St. Joseph’s in Charlton, MA, traveled to Haiti in 1990 to celebrate the blessings of their 25th wedding anniversary. After taking many subsequent mission trips, they took up permanent residence in Haiti in Sept 2006. Pwoje Espwa is an NGO (non-government organization) which cares for over 800 Haitian children. Deacon Peter is the Project Manager, which includes Program Manager, Maintenance Manager, Electrician, Plumber, Architect, Designer, and he handles a host of unanticipated emergencies each day. Linda is the Guest House Manager. The guest house is made up of 4 buildings with a courtyard in the center. Linda oversees housekeeping, the kitchen staff, guest arrangements, supplies and the menu. She likewise handles a myriad of unanticipated problems each day.
